	Buckfast Abbey is one of a small number of monasteries active in Britain today. It was founded in 1018, dedicated to Saint Mary , and run by the Cistercian order from 1147 until it was destroyed under the Dissolution of the Monasteries . In 1882 monks began living there again and today it is a Benedictine foundation. There is a superb visitors tour which includes the gardens and exhibitions along with interesting shops and a restaurant.
	Dartmouth Castle This well-preserved and beautifully sited castle juts out into the narrow entrance of the Dart estuary. Begun in the late 14th century, it was intended to protect the homes of Dartmouth merchants from ship borne attack. Today, you can enjoy other tales of the castle as you journey through time from the Tudor period and the Civil War to World War II. Why not make it a full day out and take a boat trip from the quay side at Dartmouth, which lands you just a short walk from the castle entrance.

	Kents Cavern The cave is a significant national heritage asset because it was used as a home by Stone Age people for thousands of years during prehistoric times. For this reason the cave is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and this gives it the highest possible level of protection available in Britain. 	Morwellham Quay Costumed staff welcome visitors to the restored port and help to transport you back to the bustling 1860s when heaps of gleaming copper ore filled the quays and a forest of ships' masts lined the river. All human life is here as you explore the busy assay office, marvel at the over-crowded miner's cottages and stroll through the delightful, walled gardens.
	National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth - Europe 's deepest and Britains largest aquarium. The modern building houses gigantic aquariums, a lecture hall, a cafe and a shop. The largest tank is ten metres deep and can be viewed from several different angles. Notable achievements of the NMA since its opening include the sinking of HMS Scylla to create an artificial reef in Whitsand Bay, Cornwall , as well as the recently completed ExplorOcean exhibit.
	Okehampton Castle The remains of the largest castle in Devon, in an outstandingly picturesque setting on a wooded spur above the rushing River Okement. Begun soon after the Norman Conquest as a motte and bailey castle with a stone keep, it was converted into a sumptuous residence in the 14th century by Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon, much of whose work survives. After the last Courtenay owner fell foul of Henry VIII in 1538, it declined into an allegedly haunted ruin. Riverside picnic area and woodland walks nearby. 	Paignton Zoo Home to thousands of amazing animals and plants. Visit the desert, cross the savannah, explore the forest and trek through the tropics. Use your senses to discover the wild world: look around, listen out - you'll even need your sense of smell! It's a great day out for everyone.

	South Devon Railway A seven mile long former Great Western Railway branch line that hugs the beautiful River Dart all the way from Buckfastleigh on the southern fringes of Dartmoor to the town of Totnes. South Devon Railway trains are hauled by historic steam locomotives, most of them built by the GWR in the 1920s and 30s. There really is lots to do on the South Devon Railway - and for the whole family too.
